Joseph is a Senior Lecturer in Ethnomusicology and African music at the Odeion School of Music, University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa. Through his teaching and performance, he foregrounds lesser known musical traditions from the African continent, particularly his own Ogu musical heritage, found in a few countries and sites along the West African Atlantic coast. He explores these traditions and reaches for their contemporary relevance through his research which centres collaboration with community practitioners, and also advocates the foregrounding of such traditions as equally vital to a robust understanding of musical Africa in his teaching. Joseph holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town.
