We are happy to report that the Society for Artistic Research keeps growing and developing. The editorial board for JAR issue 0 is now complete, while the Research Catalogue software is being developed to enable an inaugural issue towards the end of 2010. Our member base has been growing, and if you haven't done so already – either as individual or institution – we would ask you to consider becoming a member of SAR.
It is important to us to continue to grow a network and a discourse around the notion of 'artistic research' and JAR in particular. Please use the JAR forum to ask questions, distribute information or comment on developments – we have the sense that much work is happening 'out there' that is similar to what we do and from which we can learn.

1. Mission Statement
Society for Artistic Research (SAR) and the Journal for Artistic Research (JAR)
Identity:
The Society for Artistic Research (SAR) was founded on March 6, 2010 in Berne, Switzerland. The Society for Artistic Research is an independent, non-profit association set up for the sole purpose of publishing the Journal for Artistic Research.
The Journal for Artistic Research (JAR) is an international, online, open-access and peer-reviewed journal for the identification, publication, dissemination and discussion of artistic research.
JAR’s editorial policy is to feature artistic research outputs from across all fields. By creating a publication and dissemination space for such outputs, it fulfills a crucial role within the developing field of artistic research.
Mission:
To display and document work in a manner that respects the artist’s modes of presentation while fulfilling the expectations of scholarly dissemination
and
to re-negotiate the relationship of art to academia, and the role and function of research in artistic practice.
Strategic Aims:
1 Providing an influential voice in the debate on artistic research
2 Strengthening the international community and environment for artistic research
3 Evolving appropriate modes of dissemination for artistic research
4 Developing good practice in relation to peer-review, copyright, legal and other matters pertaining to the publication of artistic research
5 Creating connections to projects associated with the online publication
6 Inviting exchanges that enhance artistic research methodologies across the arts, sciences and humanities
Objectives:
1 The publication of peer-reviewed artistic research
2 The establishment of a specially-designed online Research Catalogue that facilitates referencing and conveys artistic qualities
3 The facilitation of access to the ideas and outcomes of artistic research by artists, museums, galleries, performance spaces and other constituents of the public sphere

2. Membership
The Society for Artistic Research continues to look for members that can help supporting JAR. SAR has currently 30 institutional and 32 individual members. The names and logos of our individual members can now be seen on this page at the bottom of our home page at: http://www.jar-online.net
From the original 67 institutions that promised to try to support JAR, only a very small number had to decline, most of the others have not yet committed themselves. If your institution is not part of the above list, can you please help us out by gently pushing the issue along? (The original list of supporting institutions as of 21/02/2010 can be accessed here: http://www.jar-online.net/newsletter/20100221/SAR_Institutional_Supporters.pdf)
We have greatly improved our individual membership process by making payments via PayPal possible. Click http://www.jar-online.net/php_paypal/sar-membership-paypal.html to become an individual member of SAR via a 50 Euro PayPal payment.
More information on SAR membership can be found here: http://www.jar-online.net/sar/sar-membership.html
The SAR membership form for both institutional and individual membership is here: http://www.jar-online.net/sar/sar-membership-form.html
Please advertise SAR individual membership with your friends and colleagues.
Note: Year 2010 SAR members will be eligible to vote for the next Executive Board during our March 2011 general assembly.

3. Editorial Board
The first meeting of the editorial board took place June 29/30 in Brussels. The editorial board is in place until the next general assembly and has the job to produce JAR issue 0, to get the research catalogue software up and running and to prepare calls for papers for the next issues.

4. Profiles
The profiles of executive and editorial board members can be accessed online through this link: http://www.jar-online.net/people.html
--------------------------------
5. Contributions
JAR issue 0 will be a curated issue with invited contributions. This is the case because we will have to improvise with our research catalogue software, which is being developed at the moment. We also feel that we need to demonstrate what we have in mind for JAR before publishing a more abstract call for papers.
The first official call for papers (CFP) will be launched with JAR 0 towards the end of 2010.
--------------------------------
6. General Assembly
The next general assembly of the Society for Artistic Research will take place in Berne, Switzerland on March 4 & 5, 2011. A detailed invite will be send closer to the time.
Note: Following the Society for Artistic Research’s articles of association only individual and institutional members can vote during the assembly. Nominations for the executive board have to be submitted to the society before the end of 2010.
--------------------------------
7. Artistic Research Catalogue
JAR is part of the Artistic Research Catalogue (ARC) project funded by SIA, NL.
The Artistic Research Catalogue project is in the process of organising 3 international conferences, which are of great interest to JAR since many questions concerning the research catalogue will be addressed.
Dates:
10 & 11/12/2010 in Gothenburg
04 & 05/03/2011 in Berne to coincide with the next SAR general assembly
Nov/Dec 2011 in The Hague
Further information will be distributed closer to the time.
--------------------------------
8. Research Catalogue Concepts
The Research Catalogue software is in its initial development phase within the ARC project. We like to open up the discussion to SAR members and interested artists and researchers, because it is such an important albeit difficult process.
You can find a document uploaded to the JAR online forum: http://jar-online.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=56 that describes the first stage of the development of the Research Catalogue. In it, we try to define notions such as: exposition, work, document, weave, tool – to name but a few. Are these terms and definitions workable?
Please add your remarks to the discussion on the forum.

9. Future Dates
Dec 10 & 11, 2010: ARC conference in Gothenburg
End of 2010: JAR 0 to be published and CFP launched
