We took another huge step towards the creation of the Journal for Artistic Research when around 70 people met in Bern and founded the Society for Artistic Research (SAR), which will publish JAR. Raising funding for the journal through individual and institutional membership fees is the society's chief effort at the moment. Please support us by becoming a member of the Society for Artistic Research. See below for details or click here.
There are a lot of challenging questions ahead of us: What are exemplary contributions to the journal? How shall the reviewing of JAR be organized? What elements from scientific reviewing processes can be used, and what needs to be different for artistic research? How to design the sur- and interfaces of JAR to give maximum freedom to the artistic contributions while offering some sense of integrity? How to set up the technology integrating know-how from the field of conservation? How to deal with often restrictive copyright legislation and what are possible ways forward? How to set up special projects in connection with the journal to include the experience or research? And finally, how to develop a sustainable business model for JAR that ensures its longterm stability? All these questions will be discussed in the coming weeks in different working groups and on the forum.

1. Founding of the Society for Artistic Research (SAR)
On March 6, 2010 the Society for Artistic Research was founded in Bern. The society provides the legal framework for JAR. You can find the society's articles, by-laws, together with the minutes of the founding meeting at: http://www.jar-online.net/sar/sar.html
Executive Board:
Florian Dombois (President) - Bern, Switzerland
Anna Lindal (Vice-President) - Gothenburg, Sweden
Darla Crispin (Vice-President) - Ghent, Belgium
Jan Kaila - Helsinki, Finland
George Petelin - Brisbane, Australia
Stephen Scrivener - London, Great Britain
Sofie van Loo - Antwerp, Belgium
In addition to this, the following people agreed to form an 'Executive Working Party', offering their help and support to the Executive Board: Annette Arlander, Henk Borgdorff, Vanessa Corby, Sher Doruff, Steve Dutton, Gerhard Eckel, Tom Fisher, Johan Haarberg, Rolf Hughes, Julian Klein, Katharine Low, Hannes Rickli, Martin Trondle, Johan Verbeke. If you like to join this group and actively support JAR, please contact us at: sar@jar-online.net
The first year of the society is transitional; all positions were filled just for one year until the next general assembly in March 2011. Please use sar@jar-online.net for all communications with the Society for Artistic Research.
--------------------------------
2. SAR Membership
The Society for Artistic Research (SAR) has two types of membership, (a) individual and (b) institutional membership. Both have one vote each in all elections. See the Articles of Association at: http://www.jar-online.net/sar/SAR_Articles-of-Association.pdf for more details.
(a) Individual membership
The individual membership fee is 50 Euro. Please use this link to register your membership: http://www.jar-online.net/sar/sar-membership-form.html
(b) Institutional membership
The institutional membership fee is 1000 Euro p.a., but the society is asking institutional members to consider joining our membership support schemes to help pay for the work to be carried out particularly during the first year:
Joining one of the membership support schemes would be most appreciated! The membership fee income will be disbursed by the Executive Board to contribute to the development and operation of JAR; to set-up the technology that will drive JAR; to design the website; to pay for legal consultations in relationship with copyright issues etc.
The JAR web-site will include an institutional membership list. Institutions that join our membership support schemes, as set out above, will be highlighted accordingly.
Should the basic fee of 1000 Euro prove prohibitive, the Executive Board will consider requests from institutions to waive the SAR fee in return for support in kind through participation in the editorial board or in some other function that supports the development and operation of JAR. The Executive Board accepts/rejects such request on a case-by-case basis. Applications for the waiving of the membership fee need to be made before April 20, 2010. Please include a description of the support that you can offer, including specific details of the resources offered, such as persons (CV etc.), facilities, etc.
Please use this link to register your membership: http://www.jar-online.net/sar/sar-membership-form.html
Please use sar@jar-online.net for questions concerning membership in the Society for Artistic Research.

3. Editor in chief
The Executive Board appointed Michael Schwab as Editor-in Chief for the first year, and, together with the Executive Board, he will assemble the journal’s Editorial Board.
Please use jar@jar-online.net for all communications with the Journal for Artistic Research.
In preparation for JAR issue 0 we are interested to receive suggestions for artistis/authors, who could be asked to contribute material of exceptional quality to JAR and the Research Catalogue.

4. Inaugural meeting in Bern on March 5/6, 2010
Around 70 artists and researchers came to JAR's inaugural event in Bern, which was a great success. During the meeting we discussed a number of questions ranging from the Research Catalogue's conceptual and visual design to the Society for Artistic Research and the idea of 'project partners' to create 'special editions' of JAR. Audio recordings of the sessions are available at: http://www.jar-online.net/newsletter/20100328/20100328-recordings.html
In prepareation for the meeting B&C Design created a mock-up design version of JAR, which we showed in a presentation and which was hung on the wall during the event. You can find the visuals at: http://www.jar-online.net/rc/rc.html

5. Next steps: Members, Contributions, Peer-reviewing, Design, Technology, Copyright, Projects, Business model
Please become member of the Society for Artistic Research.
There are now more than 500 people on our mailing list, and 67 institutions from 18 countries are on our list of supporting institutions. (Click here for the list.) This list is provisional, but we hope to enter membership agreements with most of the institutions on the list over the next month. If your institution is not on the list, although you think it should be, there is still time and we appreciate you indicating this to us.
The Editorial Board should be fully functioning by June 2010. We expect to publish Issue 0 of the Journal for Artistic Research towards the end of 2010. Please help us to find excellent contributions for our inaugural issue.
The signup for JAR news and mails is here: http://www.jar-online.net/list.html We realize that the 'Call for Support' did not sufficiently suggest that it was also a signup for the mailing list. As a consequence, very often heads of departments have signed up, but not their researchers. Please direct you colleagues to the above link so that they have a chance to take part in JAR.
Several topics are to be discussed in the coming weeks on our forum at: http://jar-online.net/forum/index.php
