We are pleased to report that preparations for JAR and our first meeting on March 5 & 6 in Bern are going well. The meeting is free; you can still RSVP with Martin Christ (y@hkb.bfh.ch). More information can be found below inside this newsletter. If you cannot attend the meeting, audio recordings and minutes will be made available for download after the meeting. We also would like to encourage you to utilize the forum, on which some very interesting discussions have developed over the last weeks.
During the meeting in Bern we want to discuss a number of issues around artistic research that are fundamental to the setting up the journal. We also want to make a few decisions, most importantly the foundation of the Society for Artistic Research (SAR), which will act as the legal backbone of JAR. Since there are still many tricky questions to solve, such as how to conduct peer reviewing of artistic research or the thorny issue of copyright, we propose a step-by-step process in which to realize JAR. This means that we would like to legally found the Society for Artistic Research during the meeting in Bern and successively extend the core team so that in March 2011 the first regular elections can be held.
According to this plan, for the first year Florian Dombois will act as president and Henk Borgdorff as one of the two vice-presidents with a second vice-president to be elected during the Bern meeting in March. During the months of March/April sponsoring members will join the society, which two month later elect three representatives via email into the so called 'Institutional Board'. Together, the president, the two vice-presidents and the Institutional Board form SAR's first year Executive Board. Furthermore, we propose to appoint Michael Schwab as Editor-in-chief, who will set up the Editorial Board, members of which can be recruited through cash and in-kind sponsorship. After the first year during which much more people will have become involved in SAR and JAR, we propose to hold regular Executive Board elections, this time for the full two year's duration, and to appoint an Editor-in-chief for five years. See below for more information, in particular the draft contracts.
There are now more than 500 people on our mailing list, and 66 institutions from 18 countries are on our list of supporting institutions. (Click here for the list.) This list is provisional, but we hope to enter sponsorship agreements with most of the institutions on the list after the meeting in March. If your institution is not on the list, although you think it should be, there is still time and we appreciate you indicating this to us. This ensures that additional information that we will send to potential sponsors will reach you.

1. Funding of the Research Catalogue
JAR received some very good news from the Netherlands. It has been part of a funding application to RAAK International (http://www.innovatie-alliantie.nl/?id=581&t=) by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Design, Music and Dance, The Hague, for a project called 'The Artistic Research Catalogue'. The bid was successful and a consortium of eight Dutch and international institutions (public and academic) supported by another 10 partners will develop the Research Catalogue concept and software over a two year period. Henk Borgdorff and Michael Schwab will lead the project.

2. The Society for Artistic Research
We propose the installation of the 'Society for Artistic Research' (SAR) as publisher for JAR. SAR is envisaged as Swiss association (or 'Verein') with two types of members: (1) Ordinary Members and (2) Sponsoring Members. Ordinary membership fee is low (EUR 50 p.a.), while sponsoring membership is EUR 1000 p.a. making this the minimal amount we seek from each institutional supporter.
Additionally, JAR very much requires additional sponsoring in cash or in kind, and we propose the following structure: all Sponsoring Members are 'bronze' sponsors; those who give more than EUR 5000 p.a. becomes 'silver' sponsors, while those who give more than EUR 10,000 p.a. are 'gold' sponsors. Propositions on what sponsors will gain from this distinguished membership will be discussed during the March meeting in Bern. At the moment we think about different levels of visibility on JAR's sponsor list and free use of JAR's Research Catalogue software with different numbers of free entries once the program is developed.
We hope to raise enough money soon to start the work for the first JAR-issue. Sponsorship may be in kind, but only if accepted by the Executive Board of SAR depending on the requirements of both SAR and JAR.

3. Draft documents
We prepared a number of draft documents for you to read, check and comment. Just like all documents we have sent so far, these are suggestions, which need to be agreed by the JAR Meeting in Bern on March 5/6. We very much require your feedback at this stage in particular if you are not able to attend the meeting.

5. Discussion forums and newsletter
The new JAR discussion forums can be accessed here: http://jar-online.net/forum/index.php
Some very interesting discussions have already started.
Please use these forums to discuss questions around SAR and JAR. The forums are very important for the phase leading up to the inaugural meeting in March, since we want to present forum discussions during the meeting (and feed back the meeting discussions into the forum). Those who are not able to come to Bern should not be left out.
The forums are also important to identify people with expertise and interest in a particular area of artistic research; this will be crucial when it comes to the question of who is best for which role within JAR. Again, the ability to be present at the meeting in Bern should not matter too much for this.
The signup for JAR news and mails is here: http://www.jar-online.net/list.html
We realize that the 'Call for Support' did not sufficiently suggest that it was also a signup for the mailing list. As a consequence, very often heads of departments have signed up, but not their researchers. Please direct you colleagues to the above link so that they have a chance to take part in JAR.

6. Next steps
The session chairs will report forum discussions to the respective session during the meeting in March. Minutes and audio recordings of the sessions will be made available online after the meeting, and we hope that some of the discussions will continue online. A newsletter summarising the results of the meeting will also be send to everybody on the mailing list.
All boards (Executive, Institutional and Editorial Boards) should be fully functioning by June 2010. We expect to publish Issue 0 of the Journal for Artistic Research towards the end of 2010.
Please use the discussion forums as much as possible for questions or comments on anything related to JAR.
Thank you all very much for your support and credit!
