Journal
for Artistic Research

19/01/2010 Newsletter:

Thank you to all of you who expressed interest in the Journal for Artistic Research. We had a lot of very positive feedback to our 'call for support', and we are happy to report that – given the support that was expressed to us – JAR is very likely to find the funds that it requires. If you have expressed institutional support for JAR, a further email will be send to you by the end of January with more financial details and a list of all other institutional supporters.

It is very important to stress at this point that all material presented online and in this newsletter is provisional. This includes design and content including names, structures, functionalities and 'philosophy'. Everything should be seen as offers and a starting point for discussion; in no way do we want to preempt any decisions to be taken by the future members of JAR.

1. Report: 'Call for Support'

We launched the 'Call for Support' at the end of November last year; since then, our website received 1200 hits and almost 200 people have signed up to receive information from JAR. At present 47 institutions from 15 countries worldwide are considering to financially support JAR or to support it in kind. (A list of sponsors will be made available before our first meeting in March.)

In particular, we are very happy to have individual artists and researchers from a number of disciplines on board as well as non-academic institutions (such as museums and theatre companies). We are still very keen to find interest in the wider field of artistic research and we strongly ask everybody to spread the word.

We decided to extend the initial 'deadline' to 31 January 2010, because an advert on the 'Art & Education' mailing list will only be posted on 20 January, with which we hope to reach additional supporters and sponsors. We apologise for this and hope that the delay poses no problem.

The original 'Call for Support' can be accessed here: http://www.jar-online.net/call/call.html

2. Invitation to meeting 5 & 6 March in Bern

JAR's inaugural meeting will take place at the Hochschule der Künste Bern in Switzerland on 5 (afternoon) & 6 (morning) March 2010. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the journal's general direction and to found JAR in legal terms (we will do this as a society by Swiss law, i.e. 'Verein').

Attendance is free, but registration is essential. If you want to attend the meeting, please register with Martin Christ [martin.christ@hkb.bfh.ch] before 20/02/2010.

If you are an artist/researcher without an institution that can pay for your trip, we would like to hear from you as soon as possible, since we want to try to help you to find funding for your trip. Please email Martin Christ [martin.christ@hkb.bfh.ch].

3. Current activities

We are still trying to recruit potential institutional supporters; the 'Call for support' is open until 31 January 2010 at which time potential institutional supporters will be introduced to each other in an email that will also give details to how we imagine the sponsorship of JAR.

Another email is supposed to be send around 20 February 2010 to everybody on the mailing list. In this email we want to introduce:

This will leave 2 weeks before the meeting in March to read, comment or question what we have drafted in the online forums. We very much hope that key questions can be sorted out before the meeting so that we are able to very quickly move on from the more bureaucratic discussions and, again, reflect as much as we can the interests of those, who cannot attend.

Our goal is to receive a written confirmation of all institutions committed to sponsor JAR before the meeting, so that we can work out how sponsors can be represented within the society of JAR.

4. JAR newsletter

The signup for JAR news and mails is here: http://www.jar-online.net/list.html

We realize that the 'Call for Support' did not sufficiently suggest that it was also a signup for the mailing list. As a consequence, very often heads of departments have signed up, but not their researchers. Please direct you colleagues to the above link so that they have a chance to take part in JAR.

--------------------------------

5. JAR forums

The new JAR discussion forums can be accessed here: http://jar-online.net/forum/index.php

Please use these forums to discuss questions around JAR. The forums are very important for the phase leading up to the inaugural meeting in March, since we want to present forum discussions during the meeting (and feed back the meeting discussions into the forum). Those who are not able to come to Bern should not be left out.

The forums are also important to identify people with expertise and interest in a particular area of artistic research; this will be crucial when it comes to the question of who is best for which role within JAR. Again, the ability to be present at the meeting in Bern should not matter to much for this.

Note: You will have to register to the forum to post messages. The forum is independant from the mailing list i.e. make sure that you register on both: http://jar-online.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3 To receive messages when a discussion topic has been updated, you will need to 'subscribe' to the forums you are interested in. For more information see: http://jar-online.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2
